Who This Is For
This guide is for citizens outside the EU/EEA/Switzerland who:
- Have (or will receive) a job offer from a Swedish employer
- Need a work permit to work in Sweden
- Are applying as an employee (not self-employed, entrepreneur, or other categories)

Requirements
To qualify for a work permit as an employee, you must meet these requirements:
Valid Passport
Passport must be valid for the entire permit period.
Signed Employment Contract
Written contract signed by both you and your employer before applying.
Terms at Least Equal to Swedish Standards
Employment terms (salary, working hours, insurance, etc.) must be at least as favorable as Swedish collective agreements or industry practice.
Employer Insurance
Employer must provide health, life, industrial injury, and occupational pension insurance by your employment start date.
Health Insurance (for short contracts)
If your employment is ≤ 1 year, you need comprehensive health insurance covering care and medical repatriation.
This requirement entered into force 1 June 2026.
Salary Requirement
At least SEK 34,470 / month
(90% of median salary SEK 38,300 from Statistics Sweden (SCB), effective 16 June 2026)
- •Your salary must be at least 90% of the median salary at the time of application
- •May need to be higher if your collective agreement requires it
- •Cannot combine multiple jobs to meet this requirement
Exemptions exist: Certain occupations/groups may use 75% of median instead of 90%.
Some IT and tech roles appear on the exempt list, but your employer's SSYK (occupation code) classification matters. Always verify officially.

Secure a job offer from a Swedish employer and sign a written employment contract.

Your employer initiates the application via Migrationsverket's e-service. They will need your name, date of birth, citizenship, and email address.

The relevant trade union is given an opportunity to review and comment on the terms of employment.
