Do You Need a Work Permit?
Yes, if you're from India, Pakistan, or any country outside the EU/EEA/Switzerland. Swedish employers can sponsor your work permit if you meet the requirements.

Key Requirements
Job Offer & Signed Contract
You must have a written employment contract signed by both you and your Swedish employer before applying.
Minimum Salary: SEK 34,470/month
As of June 2026, the minimum is 90% of Sweden's median salary (SEK 38,300). Most software engineer jobs pay 45k-60k SEK/month, well above this threshold.
Employer-Provided Insurance
Your employer must provide health, life, industrial injury, and occupational pension insurance by your start date.
Health Insurance (for contracts ≤ 1 year)
If your contract is 1 year or less, you need comprehensive health insurance covering care and medical repatriation. (Effective 1 June 2026)
The Application Process (6 Steps)

Employer Advertises Job EU-Wide (10 days minimum)
Your employer must post the job on Arbetsförmedlingen or EURES for at least 10 days before hiring from outside EU/EEA.

Sign Employment Contract
After the ad period, you and your employer sign the written contract.

Employer Starts E-Service Application
Your employer initiates the work permit application via Migrationsverket's online portal.

Trade Union Review
The relevant Swedish trade union is given an opportunity to review and comment on your employment terms.

You Complete Your Part
Upload documents, provide biometrics, and choose your preferred Swedish embassy/consulate for passport presentation.

Await Decision (2-4 months typical)
